WOC 225 Opens The Season With A Fantastic Race…

“Işıklar World Offshore 225 Championship - Fatih Municipality Grand Prix”, organized by Istanbul Offshore Club took place in Haliç, Istanbul on May 14 and 15.

Dr. Raffaelle Chiulli, UIM President, Mrs. Régine Vandekerckhove, UIM Secretary General and UIM Offshore Council members were the guests of the organization that began with the first race of the season. The racing weekend that started with 12 boats including world renowned brands and 24 pilots at the line-up ended with a double victory for Beşiktaş.

BJK boat (3) won the first race run on Saturday with a time of 43.34.390 followed by Kerim Zorlu and Cengiz Cennetoğlu of YKM Sport Team, defending champions, with a difference of 25 seconds. Third place in the first race of the season was taken by Viking boat (89) with pilots Ali Tanır and Tuğberk Uca who were very happy with their time of 45.33.281 and their place on the podium.

At the end of the races, the top three teams received their trophies from Raffaele Chiulli, UIM President; Mustafa Demir, Mayor of Fatih; Régine Vandekerckhove , UIM Secretary General; Songul Kara, Secretary General of Developing Sports Federation; Tamer Taspinar, Director of Education for Istanbul and Ugur Isik, Istanbul Offshore Club President.

The second half of the race on Sunday was the scene of fierce competition on Haliç waters. Beşiktaş team with Murat Leki and Hamdi Kitapçı, the winner of the first day as well as the holder of pole position in the morning won the second race with a time of 43.17.796 while Joseph and Berna Muhlbauer duo racing on the GSYIAD-GS boat took second place with 44.26.906; the third place went to Kerem Zorlu and Boğaç Hürzat of WD40 (44.32.687).

Fatih Municipality Grand Prix, the second race in the Işıklar World 225 Offshore Championship organized by Istanbul Offshore Club was run on May 14th.

Beşiktaş became the team of the week with two victories this weekend after winning the football cup. They were followed by Joseph – Berna Muhlbauer of Galatasaray team in the second place while the third place on the podium was taken by Kerem Zorlu and Boğaç Hürzat of team WD40 that had to retire early yesterday.

10 boats were at the line up on the second day of the first leg of the championship that started yesterday and was completed today. Italian, German, Spanish and American pilots are among the contenders of the races this season. The qualifying that took place in the morning ended with Beşiktaş team (Murat Leki and Hamdi Kitapçı), the winner of the previous day, in pole position with a time of 02.04.985. Similarly, YKM Sport (Kerim Zorlu -Cengiz Cennetoğlu) maintained its second position with 02.05.390. Kerem Zorlu - Bogaç Hürzat duo of WD40 that unfortunately retired the previous day took third place in the qualifying laps with 02.05.953.

At the start of the race the boats that faced difficulties the previous day were rather cautious and with the second half of the race the tempo increased and the teams competed fiercely on the waters of Haliç. Franke, Miele, Lenore Yacht and Angel Yachtwere the other teams that took their places in the General Classification;Stihl, Olympiquede Marseille,YKM Sport and Viking had to retire early due to technical problems.
