The Lion’s roars in Mersin

The last races of the Architon 2010 World Offshore 225 Championship are run this weekend in Mersin that is hosting the event for the fourth time. MTSO Grand Prix, the 19th leg of the season took place off the coast of Peace Square where thousands watched the race. The day’s winner was GSYİAD Galatasaray with Berna-Josef Muhlbauer. Beşiktaş piloted by Ali Tanır and Murat Leki finished second and 2 YKM Sport with Saruhan Tan and Kerim Zorlu came third. The fierce competition between Beşiktaş and Galatasaray was breathtaking. Despite finishing in third place, 2 YKM Sport’s world championship was confirmed today. Due to the closeness of Beşiktaş and GSYİAD Galatasaray teams’ points, the second and third places will be determined in the next day’s race.
Organized since 2003 by Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) and Istanbul Offshore Club (IOC) and classified as World Championship in 2008, the final races of the championship are run this weekend in Mersin. After the rains that were effective in entire Turkey, the weather was sunny in Mersin. The championship that drew thousands to the coasts brought a festive spirit to the city.

The 20-lap circuit started with 10 teams at lineup. The qualifying heats started at 11:00 and GSYİAD Galatasaray 1905 got the pole position. The team’s competitor Beşiktaş 1903 was only milliseconds behind. From the start, Beşiktaş and GSYİAD Galatasaray teams raced neck and neck, while Olympique de Marseille followed. Beşiktaş took the lead at the end of the second lap and gained on even further in every lap. Stating that they were more confident in open seas, Ali Tanır and Murat Leki turned this confidence to an advantage. GSYİAD Galatasaray tried to push for lead position while Olympique de Marseille was at its tail. Experienced pilots Jerome Brarda and Max Dessaux followed Berna- Josef Muhlbauer couple closely throughout the race and the performance of the French team was impressive. When Olympique de Marseille was forced to stop due to a technical problem encountered in the 12th lap, 2 YKM Sport took advantage of the situation and started to press GSYİAD Galatasaray. Beşiktaş lost time entering and leaving the pit and therefore its lead position to GSYİAD Galatasaray and completed the race in second place.
Great interest and support from the people of Mersin for the offshore races. The teams were very pleased to observe the attention they received during the last races of the championship and they didn’t lower the adrenaline levels for a moment. Thousands were on the coasts of the Peace Square to watch the race. After being held in various cities like Istanbul, Van, Gaziantep and Kahramanmaraş, the championship comes to an end tomorrow in Mersin. After the celebrations to be held in Istanbul, the award ceremony to be organized by UIM will take place on February in Monaco. Uğur Işık, President of IOC congratulated the teams that will represent our country at the award ceremony and thanked them for their performance and success.

YKM Sport team and pilots Saruhan Tan – Kerim Zorlu won the grand trophy in the Architon 2010 World Offshore 225 Championship and became the 2010 World Offshore 225 Champions. Mersin, hosting the event for the fourth time, celebrated the World Championship in a festive spirit. The final and most challenging of the season, Mersin Municipality Grand Prix took place on Sunday and ended with the victory of GSYİAD Galatasaray with Olympique de Marseille in second and Beşiktaş in third places. GSYİAD Galatasaray ranked second in the general standings and Beşiktaş 1903 finished the 2010 season in third place.

Organized since 2003 by Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) and Istanbul Offshore Club (IOC) and classified as World Championship in 2008, the final race of the championship was run on Sunday in Mersin. A total of 20 races were run since the start of the season which is a first in the history of the offshore championship. The races held in Istanbul, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, Van and Mersin took the sport to important locations around Turkey and reached millions. The consistent success achieved by YKM Sport team brought the championship title to Saruhan Tan and Kerim Zorlu. After going through many hardships from the start of the season, experienced pilots Berna – Josef Muhlbauer succeeded to take second place in general standings with the points they scored in the last race. Ali Tanır and Murat Leki brought third place to Beşiktaş team with their successful performance.

The 20-lap circuit started with 9 teams at the lineup. When the qualifying heats supposed to be run at 11:00 were canceled, the teams started the race according to the results of Saturday’s race. Olympique de Marseille team displayed the best performance of the season. They started in fourth place and gradually reached second place, first taking over YKM Sport and then Beşiktaş. The time gap between GSYİAD Galatasaray in the lead and Olympique de Marseille dropped to 6 seconds at one point and the boat was going on wings overcoming the two-meter high waves. Following Galatasaray boat’s pit stop, Olympique de Marseille took the lead for a while but then lost its place to its competitor when it entered pit stop and yet succeeded to finish second.
